Moscow has escalated its offensive on Kyiv with a sixth consecutive night of drone and missile attacks, resulting in at least 12 deaths in and around the Ukrainian capital. Among the casualties were eight individuals in Kyiv, including six railway workers at a railway depot, and four people in the nearby Boryspil area. The strikes, which also left several wounded, including children, have intensified pressure on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.
The overnight assault targeted Kyiv and Odesa, utilizing a substantial number of drones and ballistic missiles. Although Ukraine’s air defenses successfully intercepted numerous incoming threats, several missiles penetrated these defenses. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attributed the increased effectiveness of the Russian attacks to the shortage of US-made Patriot air-defense interceptors, which are crucial for countering high-speed ballistic missiles. He accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians to maximize destruction.
The Ukrainian railway network has been significantly impacted by these ongoing attacks. Six railway workers were killed in the strikes, which have damaged facilities and disrupted essential transport services. Meanwhile, Russia’s use of jet-powered drones, reportedly more challenging to intercept, has compounded the threat, forcing Kyiv residents into prolonged stays in shelters and disrupting daily life.
In retaliation, Ukraine has launched strikes against Russian military and energy facilities, including oil depots and warehouses, aiming to exert economic and military pressure on Moscow. This escalation occurs amid a stalemate on the battlefield, with diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict showing little progress. Ukrainian officials have appealed to Western allies for enhanced air-defense systems, particularly with winter approaching.
International efforts to mediate the conflict have been limited. Notably, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to pursue peace instead of prolonging the war, emphasizing the need to transition from ongoing hostilities to diplomatic negotiations.
