Peter Cullen, the distinguished Canadian voice actor renowned for his roles as Optimus Prime in the Transformers series and Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, has passed away at the age of 85. His family confirmed that he died on Wednesday at his Los Angeles home, surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Montreal, Cullen’s career began in Canadian television and radio before he became one of the most iconic voices in the entertainment world. He first lent his voice to Optimus Prime in the 1984 animated television series, a role he would reprise in seven blockbuster films from 2007 to 2023, along with various spin-offs. His portrayal of the character, inspired by his brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, was marked by strength tempered with a sense of genuine heroism.

In addition to his role as the heroic Autobot leader, Cullen was also the voice behind Eeyore, the beloved yet doleful donkey in the Winnie the Pooh series. He brought the character to life in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh as well as in numerous films, television series, and video games. His range of talent extended to other notable characters, such as KARR in Knight Rider, and he also created the distinctive clicking sounds for the Predator in the 1987 action movie. In 1976, he voiced the legendary King Kong in its film remake.

Cullen’s contribution to the world of voice acting earned him significant acclaim, including a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 for his work as Optimus Prime. He was also honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023. Through his work, he left an indelible mark on pop culture, his voice becoming synonymous with some of the most beloved animated and science fiction characters.
