Naval Mines Ignite Fire on Iranian Oil Tanker in Hormuz Strait

Date:

An oil tanker named EL GAIA caught fire after striking naval mines while attempting to navigate a route through the Strait of Hormuz, which had been marked as off-limits by Iranian authorities, according to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The tanker was traveling along a restricted path south of the strategically crucial waterway when the incident occurred. Efforts to extinguish the flames proved unsuccessful, as reported by Iranian officials.

The IRGC Navy emphasized that warnings had been issued about the hazards associated with the prohibited route, reaffirming that the Strait of Hormuz remains under the control of Iran’s naval forces and is closed to unauthorized passage. This advisory is part of increased regulations on maritime traffic following a US-Israeli strike on Iran on February 28, which led Iran to tighten its control over the passage.

Further, Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority has cautioned insurance companies, protection and indemnity insurers, and classification societies against providing services to vessels that violate these restrictions. The warnings are aimed at reinforcing compliance with the newly imposed limitations on shipping through the narrow passageway.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical artery in global energy supply, carrying a substantial portion of the world’s oil and gas shipments. With the enforcement of these shipping restrictions, concerns have heightened over potential disruptions to international energy markets, which rely heavily on the free flow of resources through this channel.

The restrictions on movement through the Strait have been intensified in response to recent geopolitical tensions, particularly the naval blockade imposed by US forces targeting vessels entering and leaving Iranian ports. This development underscores the volatile nature of the region and its impact on global trade and energy stability.
