Iranian Leaders Granted Permission to Attend UN General Assembly

Date:

The United States will grant visas to senior Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, allowing them to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week. This decision comes despite ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, following a conflict that erupted earlier this year.

While the Iranian delegation will be permitted to participate in the UN meetings, their movement will be confined to specific locations such as the UN headquarters, Iran’s UN mission, and their ambassador’s residence, in line with existing U.S. travel restrictions. Additionally, they will face limitations on the purchase of certain goods.

The approval aligns with the United States’ obligations as the host nation under the 1947 UN headquarters agreement, which generally grants foreign diplomats access to the United Nations. However, the U.S. retains the right to deny visas on grounds of security, terrorism, or foreign policy.

This development occurs amid intermittent diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran to resolve the conflict that commenced on February 28. The hostilities were triggered by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, which led to retaliatory attacks by Tehran against Israel and Gulf states hosting U.S. military bases.

In contrast, the U.S. has decided to deny entry to Palestinian officials, including President Mahmoud Abbas, for the UN General Assembly. This decision reflects the complex diplomatic dynamics and ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.
