Matt Hudson-Smith etched his name in the history books at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium by clinching his third European Championship 400m title, a feat no other man has achieved. The 31-year-old athlete, performing in front of a supportive home audience, delivered an impressive run, completing the race in 44.17 seconds. Positioned in lane nine, Hudson-Smith set a vigorous pace from the start and managed to hold off competitors despite a slight slowdown towards the finish.

The silver medal was claimed by France’s Muhammad Abdallah Kounta, who completed the race in 44.40 seconds. The Netherlands’ Jonas Phijffers secured the bronze, finishing with a national-record time of 44.41 seconds. Hudson-Smith, who has deep roots in the Birmingham area and has honed his skills at the local stadium since childhood, expressed that winning on familiar turf added a special significance to his victory.

In addition to Hudson-Smith’s triumph, Great Britain celebrated another podium finish in the women’s 400m hurdles. Emily Newnham showcased a powerful final sprint to earn a silver medal, clocking a personal-best time of 53.33 seconds. Slovakia’s Emma Zapletalova dominated the event, taking gold with a time of 52.91 seconds, while Portugal’s Fatoumata Binta Diallo captured bronze with a national-record time of 53.55 seconds.
