Salah Leaves Behind a Legacy Written in Goals, Trophies, and Community

Date:

Mohamed Salah’s nine-year tenure at Liverpool will come to an end this summer, the Egyptian forward confirmed this week. In a deeply personal announcement made via social media, Salah revealed that he would be leaving the club on a free transfer at the end of the season, by mutual agreement with Liverpool. His contract, worth roughly £500,000 per week, still has one year to run but will not be extended.

The statistics alone establish Salah as one of Liverpool’s most important players in its entire history. His 255 goals in 435 appearances place him third on the all-time scoring list — above such esteemed names as Gordon Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish, and Michael Owen. His four Premier League Golden Boots make him the competition’s most prolific top-scorer of his generation, and three PFA Player of the Year awards confirm that his peers recognised the quality that supporters and viewers worldwide had long celebrated.

In delivering his farewell, Salah chose personal expression over formal declaration. His video message described a bond with Liverpool that had developed beyond his expectations, characterising the club as a spirit and a passion rather than an employer. He was openly thankful to the supporters who had sustained him through nine seasons, and his closing reference to the club’s anthem — a deliberate echo of the famous words — was met with widespread emotion from fans watching around the world.

The season has been the most turbulent of his Liverpool career. His public dispute with head coach Arne Slot in December, in which he openly challenged both the quality of their professional relationship and the club’s handling of a difficult period, was unprecedented in its candour. He was dropped for a Champions League fixture in Milan before being reintegrated, and his response over the following weeks was emphatic — most dramatically when he scored against Galatasaray to become the first African player to score 50 Champions League goals.

Robertson, one of Salah’s closest friends within the squad, praised him as a player of unique dedication and talent, and expressed pride at having shared both the pitch and a friendship with him for so many years. His agent confirmed that the next destination remains open, and the football world will now wait with anticipation for the decision. Whatever club ultimately wins the race for Salah’s signature, it will be getting one of the most accomplished footballers of the last decade.
