WhatsApp is introducing a significant privacy update that allows users to connect via usernames instead of phone numbers. This change represents a major shift in user communication on the platform. Currently, this feature is being rolled out in phases, permitting users to reserve unique usernames prior to a comprehensive global launch anticipated later this year. Once fully implemented, users will be able to initiate chats using a username rather than disclosing their mobile numbers.
The functionality of the username system is straightforward. Users can establish a unique handle within the app, and those wishing to contact them will only need this username—phone numbers will remain hidden. Should a desired username already be in use, WhatsApp will provide alternative suggestions using an integrated generator. A notable design feature is the absence of a public username directory, preventing random individuals from searching for users; only those who know the precise username can initiate contact.
To reserve a username, users need to update the app and navigate to Settings, select Account, and then Username. With billions of users on the platform, early reservations are encouraged due to the high competition for popular usernames. Users will receive notifications as the feature becomes accessible in their respective regions.
Additional privacy protection is available through an optional “username key,” serving as an extra security layer. This key can be shared separately, granting users control over who can start a conversation with them. This feature caters not only to personal users but also to creators, businesses, and public accounts, enabling them to align their WhatsApp identity with existing handles on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
WhatsApp has confirmed that adopting usernames is optional. Users who prefer the traditional method of using phone numbers can continue to do so. As the feature becomes available across various regions, in-app notifications will keep users informed.
