Bahrain and France Enhance Cooperation in Defence and Nuclear Energy

Date:

Bahrain and France have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their strategic partnership, following discussions between Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and French President Emmanuel Macron. The talks, held during an official visit, focused on strengthening cooperation in defence, energy, technology, and sustainable development.

The leaders reviewed the longstanding ties between the two nations and identified opportunities to advance their partnership in support of shared economic and security interests. They also exchanged views on regional and international developments, emphasizing the importance of addressing challenges in the Middle East.

Key outcomes of the meeting included the review of a defence cooperation agreement signed in February, which sets a framework for collaboration in security, energy, technology, trade, scientific research, and cultural exchanges. The discussions also explored opportunities for joint projects in energy, industry, and transportation, including potential railway connectivity linking Bahrain with other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

Both leaders stressed the importance of enhancing defence and security cooperation to ensure regional stability. King Hamad condemned recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and reiterated Bahrain’s solidarity with the kingdom. He praised France’s support for maritime security and efforts to promote regional peace. Macron echoed this solidarity, underlining France’s commitment to cooperation on defence and regional stability.

Energy security was another focal point, with both leaders emphasizing the need for reliable energy supplies and greater cooperation to tackle regional and economic challenges. A memorandum of understanding was signed to formalize cooperation on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, aiming to develop Bahrain’s civilian nuclear energy capabilities through training and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

During the visit, King Hamad awarded President Macron the Collar of the Order of Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Exceptional Class, recognizing his efforts to strengthen bilateral relations. The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of both countries’ dedication to expanding cooperation across defence, energy, industry, and advanced technology sectors.
