Iran Attacks Two UAE Tankers in Strait, Resulting in Casualties

Date:

A deadly attack on two UAE-operated oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz has left one crew member dead and eight others injured, according to the UAE Ministry of Defence. The vessels, identified as Mombasa and Al Bahyah, were reportedly targeted by Iranian cruise missiles while navigating this crucial maritime passage. The attack resulted in the death of an Indian national aboard the Mombasa, while four of the injured are reported to be in serious condition.

The UAE condemned the attack, describing it as a severe breach of international law that jeopardizes regional stability and maritime safety. Both tankers incurred substantial damage from the strike, which has escalated tensions in the already volatile region. The incident has also led to a spike in global oil prices, reaching a four-week high, amid mounting worries over the security of shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Efforts to handle the aftermath of the attack are underway, with Oman’s Maritime Security Centre confirming the rescue of 18 crew members from the Al Bahyah, while three remain unaccounted for. The incident has drawn international concern, particularly from India, as 30 of the 46 crew members aboard the two tankers were Indian nationals. The Indian government has condemned the attack and extended condolences to the families of those affected, while vowing to collaborate with local authorities to provide assistance.

The strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit for global oil transport, has been a hotspot of geopolitical tension. This latest attack underscores the ongoing risks to maritime navigation in the area and has prompted renewed calls for heightened security measures. With the situation still unfolding, the focus remains on ensuring the safe passage of vessels and addressing the humanitarian needs of the affected crew members.
