Oman Proposes Unified GCC Strategy to Combat Harmful Social Media Content

Date:

Oman has introduced a proposal for unified guidelines aimed at managing social media content across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, seeking to enhance media coordination and protect regional unity. This initiative was presented during the 29th meeting of GCC Information Ministers in Manama, Bahrain, led by Oman’s Minister of Information, Dr. Abdullah Nasser Al Harrasi.

The meeting underscored the commitment of the GCC member states to enhance cooperation and safeguard regional security and stability. The ministers emphasized the necessity for coordinated action against misleading, offensive, and harmful content on both traditional media and digital platforms.

The Omani proposal outlines the establishment of a common framework for cooperation among relevant authorities within the GCC nations. It aims to improve the monitoring and documentation of violations, promote accountability, and support appropriate legal actions in accordance with each member state’s national legislation.

Additionally, the ministers called upon media organizations, journalists, and social media users to verify information, rely on official sources, and refrain from spreading misleading or offensive content that may undermine relations among Gulf countries.

The discussions also focused on enhancing cooperation between Gulf media institutions and adapting to rapid developments in digital media and artificial intelligence. The importance of official media in promoting public awareness, conveying accurate information, and highlighting the region’s developmental achievements was emphasized.

The meeting highlighted the significance of coordinated Gulf media efforts in addressing emerging digital challenges, protecting shared interests, and reinforcing ties among the peoples of GCC member states.
