Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for restraint and a return to diplomatic negotiations amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States. During talks in Beijing with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Wang emphasized that ongoing conflict between Washington and Tehran benefits neither the countries involved nor the wider international community.
Wang urged both Iran and the United States to adhere to their existing memorandum of understanding and to revitalize negotiations based on previous agreements. He also highlighted the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and ensuring that international shipping routes remain safe and accessible. Stability in this crucial waterway is vital for global energy supplies and international supply chains, he noted.
Additionally, Wang cautioned against allowing regional tensions to spill over into Yemen and the Red Sea, advocating for disputes to be resolved through dialogue and negotiations. Araghchi, in response, affirmed Iran’s preference for diplomatic solutions and stated Tehran’s readiness to engage in diplomatic channels while safeguarding its national interests.
The Iranian foreign minister reiterated Iran’s recognition of the existing US-Iran memorandum as valid and expressed willingness to collaborate with regional countries on enhancing security and relations. Araghchi also welcomed China’s proposals aimed at strengthening peace and security in the Middle East, showing a keen interest in deepening cooperation with Beijing.
