Iran May Halt Peace Talks with US Citing Lebanon Ceasefire Breach

Date:

Iran has issued a warning to halt peace talks with the United States, accusing Israel of breaking a ceasefire agreement through military actions in Lebanon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that the ceasefire covers all areas, including Lebanon, and any violation would be seen as a breach of the whole agreement. Tehran holds both Israel and the United States accountable for any fallout from renewed hostilities.

In reaction, U.S. President Donald Trump noted that Washington had not been officially informed about Iran’s decision to pause discussions but indicated that a temporary break in negotiations might be permissible. He underscored that the U.S. would continue its blockade on Iranian ports while steering clear of immediate military conflict.

To sustain the ceasefire, Trump engaged in talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and intermediaries connected to Hezbollah. Lebanon later confirmed an agreement between Israel and Hezbollah to mutually halt attacks, including strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs. Nonetheless, Netanyahu issued a warning that Israel would keep targeting Hezbollah if assaults on Israeli civilians continued.

Tensions escalated as Israel issued evacuation warnings for certain areas of Beirut. Iran cautioned that any significant Israeli attack on the Lebanese capital or its southern suburbs would provoke retaliatory strikes on targets within Israel. Iranian officials further accused the United States of not adhering to ceasefire commitments, pointing to ongoing economic pressures and military actions.

Tehran has made it clear that future talks, including those concerning its nuclear program, will remain suspended until broader security issues are addressed. The rising tensions have added to uncertainty in the region, exerting renewed pressure on global oil markets.
