Negotiations between the United States and Iran are reportedly advancing positively, as President Donald Trump expressed optimism about securing a temporary agreement regarding navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump mentioned that a strategic arrangement might be finalized within the next 48 hours, potentially facilitating the movement of commercial shipping through this critical maritime passage.
The proposed temporary agreement, involving the US, Iran, and Oman, is set to last for 60 days and aims to mitigate disruptions to global trade by ensuring the safe passage of vessels through the strait. Under the plan, inbound ships would utilize a northern channel close to Iranian waters, while outbound traffic would navigate through Omani waters, coordinated with Iranian authorities. Notably, the arrangement is expected to waive any transit fees during this period, and collaboration between Iran and Oman is anticipated for the clearance of mines from essential shipping lanes.
Despite the encouraging developments, Iranian officials have urged caution. They noted that even if an agreement is reached with Oman, the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is not assured. Tehran highlighted that any further progress would be contingent upon changes in US policy toward Iran.
President Trump, addressing reporters, indicated that a formal announcement could be forthcoming “tomorrow or the next day,” describing the talks with Iran as “moving along very nicely.” However, he also cautioned that failing to secure a deal could lead to significant consequences.
