Iran has released Dena Karari, a dual US-Iranian citizen who was detained in the country since December 2024. President Donald Trump announced Karari’s release, stating she is “now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition.” Trump described the move as a gesture of goodwill from Tehran.
Karari’s lawyer, Jared Genser, confirmed her safety and noted she is on her way back to the United States. He attributed her release to the efforts made by the Trump administration in negotiations with Iran.
Karari’s detention began when she traveled to Iran in 2024 to visit her family, only to find herself unable to leave the country. The situation escalated after US and Israeli military actions in Iran in 2025, leading to her being charged with espionage by Iranian authorities.
The release comes at a time of increased tensions between the United States and Iran, adding another layer to the complex relationship between the two nations. With Karari’s return home, the incident highlights ongoing diplomatic challenges and the sensitive nature of international relations.
